One of the most flexible building materials available is concrete. You can make just about anything with concrete, from fancy vanities to driveways. While you don’t need a large amount of skill to work with concrete it can be very physically demanding. Before you begin working with concrete you’ll need to have some basic tools. To make the forms for the concrete you’ll need woodworking tools as well as a saw, level, string level, hammer, and tape measure. You’ll also need a pry bar for taking apart your forms once the concrete has cured.

There are more tools you’ll need to both prepare and finish the concrete. These include spades, hoes, screeding board, tamper and float. To make concrete you mix together Portland cement with sand and gravel. These materials are combined with water to make a thick liquid and then be put into wooden or metal forms.

Wet concrete is really heavy and will need sturdy forms to hold it. There are many methods to purchase concrete including bags of cement, Quickrete which is a blend of Portland cements with the needed aggregates, and prepared mix which is brought to the job site pre mixed with water.

Quikrete is generally used for little projects. When making a concrete path or slab your fist step will be the clear the area of any waste or hazards. The area will need to be leveled and compacted at the correct depth. You’ll get the best results if the ground is kept wet. You will then use two by 6 boards to make a form. The boards can be held in place with stakes on their back sides. Hardboard or quarter in. plywood may be employed to create curved areas of your form. Ensure that the head of your concrete form is level with the need grade. Employ a chippie’s level or string level to double check.
