Recurve Bow Construction
A recurve bow is made so that the bow tips are bent towards the archer, giving a bigger draw weight but this also increases pressure on the materials. It also increases the noise. A durable, high tensile strength material is needed for the limbs. In the past wood was the material of choice, in particularly for bows constructed from a single material. More sophisticated techniques were developed to use the properties of different types of wood. For example Yew was commonly used in Europe As various parts of the Yew tree have excellent strength and energy storage capacities.
The Construction of Compound Bows
Compound bows however, use a variety of materials. In the past a laminated construction method used horn, bamboo and sinew. Bows constructed in this way have a higher draw weight with shorter limbs but tend to be less durable than bows made from a single material. They may also be made using glue that can dissolve in water so need to be kept dry. Nowadays metals, laminated woods, fiberglass and carbon fiber are all used in compound bow construction.
The Bow String
The bow string used must be stretch resistant and light, unaffected by water but still capable of holding the necessary draw weight. In previous years animal sinew, guts and hair were all used plus linen and hemp and other plant fibers. Plant fibers, although they added to the cost, had improved strength. Nowadays synthetic plastics are used which are resistant to water and they also have superior mechanical properties. They are less expensive to manufacture.
